ArabicReader ( المساعد في قراءة العربيّة ) eases the reading of arabic texts. It is aimed at intermediate or advanced students of the Arabic language ( اللغة العربيّة ) or even those who speak arabic but who are reading texts from an era or subject where some of the vocabulary is not familiar to them.
Arabic has an enormous lexicon and this is perhaps the greatest hurdle facing the student. While the student of English need only learn 1,500 words to get by, the student ( طالب ) of Arabic requires at least 6,000. ArabicReader allows the learner to read texts of their own choice and interest and then to acquire the words that they did not know. The essential process of enlarging the vocabulary is thereby greatly eased and the learner can progress much more quickly than if they were tied to the slow process of looking words up in a printed dictionary. Words are also placed in the context of the root جذر from which they derive, giving the student an enhanced understanding of the underlying meaning of the word, and other similar words.
In terms of the reading material available, the student can select from a large library of texts already available on the site such as this example essay, upload their own text, or read any arabic web site such as an arabic news page .
ArabicReader allows the reader to look up the meaning of any word simply by clicking on the word as they read it. If the reader chooses they can then add the word to their vocabulary list and the site will add it to their list of words to memorise. At any time the reader can then use ArabicReader to memorise the words they did not know or print off an automatically generated pdf for later revision.
This website is not, and never will be, for arabic translation. The aim is to help a student to improve their knowledge of the arabic language, not to translate it for them.
Finally, this application is a work-in-progress and needs your help. When ArabicReader is requested the meaning of a word which has not been entered into its database, the option is presented to the user to add the meaning of that word to the database. You can improve the application by looking up the meaning in a dictionary and entering it into the ArabicReader database. That word is then available for anyone who needs to look it up.
To help save you some time in entering the details, choose from the first list the nearest word to the one you wish to add. Then, to save time on entering the root letters, you can also choose the nearest root letters from the list on the right. If you don't want to use this facility then simply press 'OK' |
